The Face of Nature

Yosifu
The Face of Nature
2012
Acrylic on canvas
Size 60cm x 80cm

“Mother Earth, what has caused the shock and sadness on your face?

How can we make you smile again?”

In Yosifu's series of Aboriginal, my favorite one is “The Face of Nature”. It was his new artwork finished in 2012. I chose this artwork for my final paper because I think this is the most typical one which totally shows his painting style -- a simple facade but hiding serious social commentary.

From the simple façade of this artwork, it describes a young aboriginal girl was panic and shock at the moment she saw that her own land was destroyed by the commercial exploitation when she came back from the north. From a deeper façade of this artwork, the young aboriginal girl was a metaphor of the Mother Nature. She was shock and upset because of all those harming pollution which made by human beings.

Most importantly, Yosifu wants to express his discontents regarding to the Miramar Resort project in this painting. It is a build-operate-transfer development project which began in 2004 on a 6 hectare area by the beach of Shanyuan Bay, even though it did not pass an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) in advance as was required (Lee, 2012). This place not only provides the most beautiful beach for the public, but also is the traditional living domain of the Amis. From Yosifu’s perspective, the program should be torn down because it will damage the ecology of the unspoiled coast and will affect the way of living of the tribes. He encourages the public to stand up for the protection of the bay in order to prevent it from being abused for commercial interests through his painting.

  1. I love the art work that you chose and
I love the concept of this art work that it reflects the pollution and harm made by human being.

Besides, I really like this artist's painting style. He used colorful and cheerful colors to bring out such a serious topic.

However, this kind of topic will usually make people think of something bad, messy , dark and sad,
but why does he use sharp and bright
    colours to carry it out?

Does the ink splat on the left bottom corner mean anything special?

Also, i suggest that you can add more personal opinion to this art work.
eg. How do you feel about it ?
Do you think his art work has affected others?

  2. I think you can include more descripions about what do you think of the painting, like the colour he chose, the medium he used and the way he present the message. Do you think they can relate to the problem?

And How is the impact of his artwork? Do they really trigger of people's attention?

Why you chose this artwork of him instead of others from him? Any special reason? And Why this is the most typical one of his artwork?

  3. I think you describe your chosen art work quite detailed. At least, you understand the concept and message of art work. It is very important.

However, I would like to ask why do you think this is the most typical one and your favorite one
of his artwork? How do you feel his art work ? You can express your idea in his art work. It can be more persuasive in your final paper.

  4. I think you have chosen an interesting piece. It is because I haven't thought that the piece is about nature and human being when I first saw it. After I had read your comments about the piece, I realized that that was the original idea.

Besides the idea of the painting, how would you describe the features of the painting such as the texture, the color used, the size, and the emotion expressed on the girl's face? Do you think the girl's emotion can be more exaggerated so that you can get how anxious and sad the girl is?

  5. These days, the problem of civilization is getting serious. The more modern, The more problems happened. It is destiny of people who live in contemporary world.

When I was young, I visited my granfather's home very often. It is located in very remote and rural areas. The small town surrounded by beautiful mountains and streams. I picked up rasberries, and apples. Sometimes swam in the stream with my sister, and reletives.

However, after growing, the town is slowly developing, so stream disappered and the view is changing. I was really sad that I lost my memories. Watching this piece of work, I remembered the feeling that I felt when I was young.

There is a question, why the artist painted so colorful?
If she wanted to show depression and shocking, it is better for using darker color.

    Thanks

  6. HELLO VENUS!

It is a nice art work.

I feel curious that why you know the young aboriginal girl was a metaphor of the Mother Nature? Is there any trace or the artist had explained on it?

I think you may also talk more about the technique skill on this artwork.

  7. Hi, Venus! Nice job!

This is a colorful painting with a woman shocked. Mother Earth is sad about her land. However, I think that a colorful painting means joyful and celebration. I am not sure why Yosifu use color to show unhappiness.

On the other hand, I like the message of the painting. Pollution, destroying the nature, causing damage to the earth are always been talking around the world. However, people seem to ignore the problem and continue to do that. I believe we should raise awareness about that. So, using art may be a good way to do it. Also, I like the message that Yosifu is asking when Mother Earth can be happy again. It means that when people would wake up and not to make damage on the earth. It seems to be a hope.

  8. Dear Venus,

Judging from your presentation, I think you have enough material to write on the topic, style, and artist's background. It's also interesting that you mentioned that the artist himself always refers to this painting in interviews.

Contrary to some of the comments above that suggest to include your own opinion, I don't think you need too much of "I think" or "I like because" (It's obvious that you are attracted to the work and style) but rather I would suggest to think a little bit more critically about the message and context it is presented in. How does art, work as a medium for such message in a situation like the Hotel Art Fair? Is it more effective or is there a discrepancy? Does the message or aboriginal theme add to the attractiveness of the art work, or is the painting strong enough by just it's colors and technique? ie, How strong is this as an art work and/or as a message?
